North Surry’s team placed forth, just six strokes behind the third place team of South Stokes. Only the top three move on to the state championships.
Taylor Coalson and Justin Young, both from North Surry, will move on to the state championships, though, as individuals. Coalson came in first with a 74 and Young tied for second with Wilkes Central’s Zac Joines with a 75.
Carter did not make the cut, falling five strokes short with an 80.
“It’s been four years since North Surry has had a representative at the state championships, so it means a lot to us,” North Surry coach Daron Atkins said. “We are an extremely young team, and having Taylor and Justin make it as a sophomore and junior, respectively, shows a lot of composure, especially to play in the conditions they had to play in today.”
Coalson and Young will head to Buies Creek for the two-day state championships on Monday to play 36 holes overall.
“We still have a little work to do now that we’ve made it to the next round,” Atkins said. “Taylor and Justin will be working on their game all week long, and come Monday and Tuesday, we’re hoping to perform well.”
Atkins also said he was pleased to see some fans come out to support the teams even with the unfortunate weather conditions.
“It’s good for the guy’s morale to have family and friends to watch them play,” he said. “As a whole it’s been a wonderful season, and I’ve been grateful to be with these guys.”
