CANA, Va. — A Mount Airy woman was airlifted to a Triad hospital Saturday afternoon after a single-car accident in Cana.

Benice Juanita Combs, 59, of 116 Fisher Ridge Trail, Mount Airy, ran off the right side of Flower Gap Road while trying to avoid a dog when her Mazda 626 overturned in a yard, according to Trooper S.E. Kinney of the Virginia State Police.

The accident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday. Combs was heading away from Old Pipers Gap Road on Flower Gap.

Kinney said it was his understanding that Combs suffered a head injury, and the top had been cut off of her car by emergency officials prior to his arrival on the scene.

Combs was taken by the Lifeguard chopper from St. Paul School to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

Kinney said there will be no charges in the wreck.
