For 1A, Mount Airy’s Nick John came through with the win over his teammate Eric Belton 6-1, 6-0.
To get to the championship game, John beat Michael Domabyl 6-0, 6-0 and Belton beat Christian Immel 6-0, 6-0.
The 1A doubles championship will be played today between Mount Airy’s Matt Kessler and Brooks Mayberry and Bishop McGuinness’ Joe Riazzi and Kevin Weckworth.
East Surry’s team of Yardell and Hartley played the closest match of the doubles tournament taking Bishop McGuinness’ Kiser and Wilson to 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
Mount Airy coach Scott John said he was pleased with his team’s effort.
“The singles’ guy looked good and our doubles’ guys have a good shot to win out,” he said. “Now we just have to get ready for the playoffs.”
The 2A portion of the tournament was held at Mount Airy Middle School with the championships finishing up today.
In singles, North Surry’s Landon Hodges lost to West Stoke’s Lucas Shelton 6-1, 6-1 and North Surry’s Daniel Taylor lost to West’s Jacob Shelton 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles, North Surry’s team of Brandon Orndorff and Nick David defeated South Stokes’ Matt Childers and J. Matt Marshall 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 for North Surry’s only win of the tournament. They eventually lost to West Stokes’ Christian Evaro and Thomas Gravitt.
In other doubles action, North Surry’s Steve Krause and Nick Morgan fell to West Stoke’s Austin Andrews and Kevin Moorer.
Orndorff and Davis will play Andrews and Moorer tomorrow to determine the first regional participant.
East picks up a close one
PILOT MOUNTAIN —The East Surry Cardinals and the Mount Airy Granite Bears baseball teams played a tough, tight game Wednesday night and East Surry came out on top 2-1.
The Cardinals took advantage of a couple of Mount Airy miscues to make up for a game lacking in a ton of offense for both teams.
“Mount Airy outplayed us tonight,” East Surry coach Barry Hall said. “They came ready to play, and we didn’t. It was senior night for us, I don’t know if the kids were nervous or if they didn’t have their minds in the game, but we weren’t ready to play.
“Mount Airy struggled a little bit this year, but you couldn’t tell it tonight.”
Both teams were aided by strong pitching. Mount Airy’s Nathan Welch took the loss, but kept East Surry hitters on their heels for much of the night.
East Surry’s Evan Smith went five innings giving up one run, four hits and no walks. Jordan Miller came in the fifth for the save giving up no hits, no runs and no walks. Both pitchers struck out three batters a piece.
East Surry struck first with one run in the bottom of the second.
Zac Chilton singled with one out and Chase Mills was his courtesy runner. Evan Smith singled, making it first and second with one out. Chilton tagged from second to third on a fly out to right field by Lathan Hunter.
Evan Smith got caught in a run-down after Welch faked a throw to third and was eventually tagged out, but not before Mills came in to score a run for East Surry.
Mount Airy answered in the third inning. Choppy Cawley singled and Austin Taylor tried to sacrifice him over. Smith overthrew first base setting up Mount Airy with second and third. After a botched squeeze play, Dee Rucker singled to right to score Cawley for Mount Airy’s only run.
The tie didn’t last long as East Surry came back in the bottom of the fourth when Chris Hardy led off with a walk. He stole second, but eventually got thrown out going to third on a fielder’s choice. Austin Tilley advanced to second as Troy Jessup was hit by a pitch, and Tilley tagged from second to third on a Chilton flyball.
Hardy eventually scored from third when Welch balked him in.
East Surry will play at West Stokes on Friday in a game that has state playoff implications.
“Hopefully we will try to get a little motivation with the kids, try to address our mistakes from tonight, and get ready for the game Friday,” Hall said.

Two out offense lifts North Surry
North Surry used a string of timely hitting to make sure its seniors went out on a high note on Senior Night, beating North Stokes 6-1.
After scoring one run in the second inning off doubles by Taylor Hull and Ryan Stone, the Greyhounds scored the rest of their runs with two outs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
In the fourth, North Surry strung five singles in a row with two outs to score three runs.
That was all the run support winning pitcher Jameson Ross needed.
“He pitched lights out for six strong innings by keeping the ball around the strike zone,” North Surry assistant coach Shane Worth said. “He didn’t strike out but one, but we made the plays around him.”
Taylor Hull came in for the seventh inning, striking out three to end the game.
“Both pitchers were seniors, so it was big for them to come out on senior night like they did,” Worth said.
Offensively, Stone went 3-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, Alex Ratcliff went 2-3 one RBI and a run scored and Hull went 2-3 with two runs scored.

East Surry rolls over Mount Airy
PILOT MOUNTAIN —The East Surry softball team didn’t let the rain delay slow them down a bit as the Cardinals beat Mount Airy in a makeup game 14-0 Wednesday night.
Hayley Shelton pitched four innings with six strikeouts, one walk and only allowed one hit for the win. Paula Kiser finished the shortened game on the mound in pitching a three up-three down fifth inning for the Cardinals.
Nine of the fourteen Cardinal runs were batted in by Julie Bullington and Hannah Merritt, but it seemed like every player contributed to the all-around win for East Surry Wednesday.
“Obviously it was a conference game that we’re happy to win. When you can beat your cross county rival 14-0, you feel pretty good about it,” East Surry coach Derrick Hill said. “Hopefully tonight was a good start for us for a productive week.”
This was the first of four straight games for the Cardinals, and Hill was pleased he was able to get Hayley Shelton some rest.
“We talked to the kids about scoring some runs so we could give Hayley a rest,” Hill said. “We are a little concerned about four days in a row, not that she can’t handle it, but at the same time, we don’t want her to wear out before we get into the playoffs.”
Hill didn’t have to be concerned about that with the outpouring of runs the Cardinals had from 11 hits in just four innings.
The offense started in the second inning for East Surry with Beth Isaacs leading off with a base hit. She was moved from first to second by a sacrifice, and scored on a ball hit by Bullington. Jessica Barker walked and Merritt had a double to knock Bullington and Barker in.
The third inning was more of the same as Hayley Shelton got a single and Morgan Chilton and Isaacs walked to load the bases. Bullington then got two more RBIs with a single and Barker followed with another RBI single.
Merritt struck out, but ran to first when the catcher misplayed the ball and another run scored on the throw.
That smart base running continued in the fourth inning as the Cardinals scored two of their seven fourth-inning runs off passed balls.
Hill said Mount Airy was better than when the Cardinals played them earlier this season.
“They are young, but we were impressed with the way they battled at the plate today,” he said.
East Surry will play again tomorrow taking on Starmount at home.

Emotional win for North Surry
North Surry’s softball coach Julie Gammons felt a special kinship to her eight seniors from this year’s team because it was her first group she’s had for four years.
The emotion was worn literally on her face.
“It was sad, but I’m proud of what we’ve done in our four years,” she said. “But I cried, and cried and cried.”
The Greyhounds went out on a positive note beating North Stokes 4-2 Wednesday night.
Juliana Morton, Emily Newman and Kara Hodges led the way for North Surry offensively. Morton and Newman both went 3-3 with three singles. Hodges went 2-3 recording all four RBIs for the Greyhounds.
“We hit the ball and made contact all night,” Gammons said. “Kara, Emily and Juliana were really strong tonight and they hit where people weren’t standing, and that ended up being the difference in the ball game.”
North Stokes had beaten North Surry previously this season.
“It was nice to be able to stand toe to toe with them tonight because they have a very strong hitting lineup,” Gammons said. “I was proud that we were able to hold them to two runs even with all the emotions we had.”
North Surry will play at Mount Airy Friday night.

Surry Central loses heartbreaker
WALNUT COVE —The Surry Central soccer team lost two games in two days in a heartbreaking manner.
On Tuesday night, the Golden Eagles lost to West Stokes at home 1-0.
Surry Central coach Matt Richardson said it was the best game the Eagles played all year.
“We fought hard,” he said. “They are a really good team, very disciplined, very skilled, and we stuck with them all night, but we just couldn’t get one to fall.”
There was an opportunity for Surry Central at the end of the game with a one-on-one with the goalie where the ball hit the bottom of the post, looking like it was going in, but it just missed.
Surry Central traveled to South Stokes on Wednesday trying to not be discouraged from the night before.
South Stokes came on strong scoring in the sixth minute from a corner kick and the 13th minute from a short chip shot over the goalie.
Surry Central was able to put one on the board before halftime from a goal by Angelica Gonzalez in the 34th minute. She went one-on-one with the goalie who got a yellow card from cleating Gonzalez, but was still able to get the goal even with the foul.
Richardson said the first half was tough for the girls.
“We were a little bit tired mentally and physically last night because we put a lot of effort into that game, so we were a little sluggish in the beginning,” he said.
The Eagles came out stronger in the second half with another goal by Gonzalez in the 54th minute. She broke through two defenders and buried it in the net.
South Stokes was able to pull through at the end though with a goal in the 78th minute off a corner kick.
Richardson said he was impressed with how his team played against West and South Stokes, especially after losing to them both by larger margins earlier in the season.
“I’m proud of the improvements that we made, and we just hope they keep their head in it,” he said. “We’ve got two more games and hopefully we can pick up two wins and get a playoff draw.”
Surry Central will take on Mount Airy at Mount Airy Friday.
