DOBSON — With spring comes warm weather, outdoor sports and the reappearance of vibrant colors.

It’s a time of renewal and of celebration for the conclusion of the journey through winter.

Friday’s Cancer Awareness softball game hosted by the Surry Central Golden Eagles and Surry Drug fits neatly into place with this mindset, with area cancer survivors and those who have lost their battle with the disease, scheduled to be honored prior to the 6 p.m. first pitch.

A portion of gate proceeds and concessions will go to the 2010 Relay for Life.

The Golden Eagles will take on the West Stokes Wildcats in an important Northwest 1A/2A softball showdown, but both teams will take time out to keep life’s true battles in focus.

“I think it’s a good thing because there is more to life than playing softball or playing sports,” Surry Central coach Glenn Craddock said, adding that Surry Central senior pitcher Austin McLamb’s mother, Donna McLamb, has spearheaded the event from its beginning stages.

“There are a lot of people who can’t get out and we need to be aware as a community and help and give back when we can. I want our girls to learn that there is more to life than just softball. We are trying to do life lessons here. Of course we would love to win when we can but when it all comes down to is doing the right thing is more important.”

Food and refreshments will be on hand will all proceeds going to charity. All cancer survivors who attend will be honored and will receive free admittance to the game.
