Elkin may have been the location of the opening ceremony, but the bikeway covers roadways all across Surry County, including Mount Airy, Pilot, Dobson and other areas outside of the municipal boundaries.
The 513-mile bikeway route is a sign of how working together for a common goal can benefit everyone in the community.
Government officials from all four municipalities, the county and the state Department of Transportation as well as recreation officials and cyclists from across the county worked collaboratively to make sure the bike routes designated for the bikeway are safe roads, but also are the most scenic in the county.
These roadways chosen for the bikeway include some of the best views of Pilot Mountain, area wineries and landscapes, the Blue Ridge Mountains, our waterways and more.
They should not only be a destination for cyclists from Surry County, but also for cyclists from across the state and even the nation.
Our county has been host to several statewide cycling events in the past few years, and there is no reason this new project shouldn’t bring more cyclists to the area — in turn, bringing people to stay in our lodging facilities, using our eating establishments and stores, and bringing additional tourist money to the county.
The people of Surry County should be proud of the resources we have at our fingertips and should welcome users of those with open arms. So to those driving the roadways, take care and be on the lookout for cyclists in the roads, and to those cycling in the area, welcome to beautiful Surry County.
