PILOT MOUNTAIN — An elderly man’s life was saved after a K-9 with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office led deputies to a creek where the man had fallen.

The incident occurred last week, according to Sheriff Graham Atkinson. He said Harry Inman, 85, of West Dodson Mill Road, went walking with his dog on his regular evening walking route from his home. He was last seen at 2:30 p.m., and when he didn’t return after a while, his wife called the sheriff’s office. Atkinson said officers began looking for Inman in the woods around 7:45 p.m.

A K-9 with the sheriff’s office was able to track Inman to within a few yards of where he was laying in a creek. Atkinson said Inman had tried to cross the creek but had fallen and was not able to get back up. Atkinson said the man’s body temperature was down to 84 degrees when he was found.

“He would not have lasted much longer,” Atkinson remarked.

Inman was found around 8:30 p.m. Atkinson said that Inman would have probably only lasted an hour or two longer in the cold creek.

Emergency Services Director John Shelton said, “My understanding is he recovered well.”
