ELKIN — Mrs. Maggie Ethel Hughes Thompson, 90, passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2010, in Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Thompson was born July 4, 1919, in Stokes County to Samuel and Mintora “Minnie” Franc Hughes and the sister of 26 siblings. She was a member of St. Home Missionary Baptist Church and was employed with Vaughn -Basset for more than 25 years. Mrs. Thompson and her husband were blessed with three children, Betty Jean Thompson-Taylor, Vestal H. Thompson, and Clarence Thompson Jr., all of whom have preceded Mrs. Thompson in death. Survivors include her husband of 65 dutiful years, Clarence Thompson of Elkin; granddaughter Tonya Taylor of Maine; three step-sisters, Lillie Mae Penn-Franc of Pilot Mountain, Ida Penn-Cox of Stellton, P.A., and Versia Penn-Morre of Mount Airy; a host of nieces and nephews Edith M.Williams of Rockville, M.D., Errie Taylor of Harrisburg, P.A.; great nieces and nephews including Audrey Towns of Gaithersburg, M.D., Gregory Williams of Gaithersburg, M.D; a host of loving cousins including Opal Hughes-Watkins of Pilot Mountain , and numerous friends. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 15, 2010, at 3 p.m. in St. Home Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday afternoon from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church. Online condolences may be made at www.elkinfuneralservice.com.
