n The Petsense store on South Andy Griffith Parkway was the victim of a false-pretense case reported Wednesday, involving an unknown individual passing a false travelers check at the store in order to obtain merchandise. The amount of the loss was not listed. The case remains open for investigation.
n It was reported Tuesday that property had been taken from a home owned by Bray Properties on Worth Street. Listen as stolen were a $2,500 heat pump and copper wiring from an air-conditioning unit. The case remains open for investigation.
n Police also are investigating a break-in at Papa’s Scooters on Newsome Street, which was discovered Monday. Someone used a key and a prying tool to gain entry to the business, then removed a security lock box and miscellaneous papers.
n Two cases of obtaining property by false pretenses were reported on Monday, involving separate incidents in late March at the Poppy’s clothing business on Moore Avenue in which a known individual wrote a check on a closed account. The case remains open for investigation.
n An assault, hit and run and damage to property were reported Saturday by Traci Kay Cheek, who told police that a known individual backed up his vehicle to block the path of hers on Westfield Road, causing a collision resulting in damages of about $900. The man then fled. No arrest had been made at last report.
n Crystal Jeanie Sheets, 31, of 127 Ezekial Way, Lowgap, is facing two larceny violations for allegedly taking items from Mount Airy businesses. Sheets allegedly stole merchandise valued at $60 Saturday at Dollar General on Rockford Street, and also was observed placing items worth $67 in her pockets at Kerr Drug on April 1. She was banned from the latter store and is facing court appearances on May 5 and June 8.
n Counterfeit currency managed to make its way from a table at a city restaurant to a convenience store Saturday, police say. Anita Terrell Bryant, a Woodcreek Drive resident employed by Golden Corral on Rockford Street, told police that someone left a $10 bill as a tip, but when she tried to use the money at Neighbors across the street, a cashier there advised that it was bogus. Police are investigating.
n Rachel Sara Williamson, 28, of 1053 S. Main St., was served with a warrant for larceny last Friday after she was encountered at a local convenience store by officers who knew she was wanted on the violation issued on March 27. No other details about the alleged crime were listed. Williamson is free on a $2,500 unsecured bond and is to appear in Surry District Court on Monday.
n Also last Friday, city police located a man who was wanted by federal authorities on a felony weapons charge. Kevin Ray Bohannon, 42, of 485 Old Highway 52, was encountered in a parking area at Jones Intermediate School during a suspicious-person investigation and was found to be wanted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Bohannon was held in the Surry County Jail on a 72-hour detainer, awaiting further action by the U.S. Marshal’s Office.
n Michael Lee Tuttle, 48, of 143 Mayes Haven Road, was arrested for habitual driving while impaired last Friday after police encountered him during a civil dispute at Hardee’s on West Pine Street, where Tuttle allegedly was verbally abusive to employees and sped around the building. Testing revealed Tuttle’s blood-alcohol level to be more than twice the legal limit, according to arrest records that show the man was convicted of DWI three times in the past 10 years. He was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $5,000 secured bond and is to appear in District Court on the latest DWI offense on April 27.
n A larceny was reported on April 1 at Coppola’s Italian Restaurant, where an unknown male ordered various entrees and then left without paying the $50 tab. The individual was seen leaving in a green 2005 Volkswagen Jetta, but no arrest had been made at last report.
n Shona Cheryl Dawson, a Hillcrest Drive resident, told police on April 1 that medication had been stolen from her home by an unknown party. The case is listed as inactive, with no leads to pursue at this time.
n Yvonne Marie Mauldin of Mauldin Ridge Trail reported on March 31 that several gold and diamond rings valued at $5,000 altogether had been stolen in a break-in at her home, which was entered through a window. The case remains open for further investigation.
n An arrest was made on March 31 in connection with a recent crime at JCPenney in Mayberry Mall. Escamilla Conception DeMoncerrat Rodriguez, 19, of 131 Home Place Park Road, Ararat, was charged with larceny by employee, a felony. Rodriguez allegedly fraudulently entered refunds at the store and pocketed the money, arrest records show, but no dollar figure has been released. She is free on a $5,000 unsecured bond and is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on May 24.
n Nicholas Frank Missino, 30, of Christiansburg, Va., was arrested as a fugitive from justice on March 31 after city police encountered him on Hadley Street. Details on why Missino was declared a fugitive were not listed on an arrest report, which indicates that he was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $10,000 secured bond.
n Jamie Ray Gammons, 28, of 441 Crotts Road, was cited for larceny on March 31 after he allegedly was seen placing merchandise in his pocket at Lowe’s of Mount Airy and later was located outside the business with the items valued at $23. Gammons is scheduled to appear in court next Wednesday.
n Property recently was obtained from Lowe’s of Mount Airy by false pretenses. Someone used a counterfeit check for $2,487 to buy a Husqvarna 54-inch riding lawn mower, according to a report made on March 30. The case remains open for investigation.
n An embezzlement was reported on March 30 by loss-prevention personnel at Wal-Mart, where an employee allegedly took $100 from a cash register. No arrest had been made at last report.
n A break-in of a motor vehicle and a larceny were reported on March 27 at Mount Airy High School. A latch was broken on the rear driver-side door to gain entry, resulting in the theft of a JVC CD player and about 15 CDs owned by Lewis James Goins, a Dudley Avenue resident who attends the school. The loss was put at $205 in the case that remains open for investigation.
n Alex Odean Bryant, 27, of 127 Ray Lane, Roaring River, was cited for larceny at Wal-Mart on March 27 for allegedly concealing medication and two laser sights for a gun, valued altogether at $162, and leaving the store without paying. Bryant is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on April 26.
