The residents of 219 Spring Creek Trail finished mowing their lawn in the afternoon and stored the mower in the basement of the home, according to Ryan Hooker, fire chief of Franklin Volunteer Fire Department. Around 3:32 p.m., the mower started a fire which spread around a section of the basement.
Franklin, White Plains and Bannertown volunteer fire departments responded to the call and Pine Ridge Volunteer Fire Department was standing by to assist. It took firefighters about 15 minutes to contain the blaze, which never left the basement. However, according to Hooker, there was heavy smoke damage in the upper floors of the home.
The woman residing in the house was home at the time and called 911 to report the fire while her husband had left to run an errand. According to Hooker, she was treated at the scene for minor injuries but refused transport to the hospital.
Hooker is unsure what caused the lawnmower to catch fire initially.
