n Judith Duff, internationally-acclaimed potter specializing in wood-fired and Japanese Shino technique, will present a two-day demonstration workshop in E162, Surry Community College ceramics studio. Workshops begin at 9 a.m. and last until 4 p.m. each day. Seating is limited. Contact Richard Montgomery at 386-3369 to reserve a seat. Duff will end the workshops with a lecture on April 8 in the teaching auditorium from 5 to 7 p.m.

n The Special Education Advisory Committee for Carroll County Public Schools will meet at 5:30 p.m. in the School Board Conference Room, on the third floor at the Carroll County Governmental Complex, Hillsville, Va. The purpose of this meeting is to review the Special Education Annual Plan for 2010-2011. The public is invited to comment concerning Special Education services for children in home school or private school. The meeting is open to the public.

n The Surry Arts Players present “Gideon,” a play that explores the relationship of an ordinary man with God through the story of Gideon, a judge in the Old Testament. n Cruise In For Christ will be having a cruise in and benefit car show at New Beginning Baptist Church from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to benefit Donnie Holyfield. Bring old cars, hot rods, trucks, bikes and tractors. The entry fee is $10. There will be trophies for six categories. Events include live music, preaching, bake sale, yard sale, 50/50 drawing, games, door prizes and hamburgers, hot dogs and cold drinks. The rain date for this event is May 1. n The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History will have Super Saturday for children ages 7 and older at 10 a.m. There will be hands-on history in the children’s gallery. Participants will make a compass and experiment with real Lodestone. This event is free for museum members and $5 for non-members. There also will be a free concert with Creek Junction from 7 to 9 p.m. They will perform traditional bluegrass featuring a creative flair and original music.
n There will be a country breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. at the Longhill Community Building sponsored by the Ararat-Longhill Ruritan Club. On the menu are sausage, bacon, eggs, grits, gravy, biscuits, toast, juice, coffee and more. Donations only. Proceeds will go toward community projects and needs.

n North Carolina Humanities Road Scholar, Billy Stevens, M.A., lecturer and musician, will present a program called “Samson and Delilah: From Pulpits to Pop Stars” at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History. This event is free to the public.

n National Library Week will be celebrated at the Mount Airy Public Library. The library will be announcing its essay contest winners during this week and beginning its Spring Book Sale. All money raised during the book sale will help fund projects throughout the year.

n New York Times best-selling author Carole Boston Weatherford will visit Surry Community College and conduct three presentations in the Teaching Auditorium at 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. She also will lead an afternoon presentation and book-signing in the Teaching Auditorium from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Weatherford has been writing since first grade when she recited an original poem to her mother and has since authored 32 books, celebrating family stories, fading traditions and forgotten struggles. n The Mount Airy Public Library’s Picture Books book club meets to watch the movie “My Sister’s Keeper” at 6 p.m. The book will be available for checkout at the library, and the movie is free.
n Cameron Kent of WXII 12 will present a program on his recently published book “The Road to Devotion” at noon at the Mount Airy Public Library. This work of historical fiction is loosely based on the Devotion area of Surry County. The program is free and those attending are welcome to bring lunch. n In support of the Global Language consortium, specifically the Brazilian culture, a one-hour program on Capoeira Dance will be performed by the Nego Gato Dance Company from 11 a.m. until noon at the outdoor patio area of the Knight’s Grill at Surry Community College. Capoeira combines the various forms of music, dance, acrobatics, martial arts, theater and philosophy into a total mind/body discipline, whose roots originated in the Salvadoran and Brazilian regions of the world. This group has performed at the Kennedy Center.

n Terry Garwood, horticulture agent at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, 210 N. n The Surry County Genealogical Association has arranged to host a regional Swap Meet. This event is open to local genealogy and family history groups as well as individuals with an interest in genealogy of the surrounding region. This event is free. Everyone is eligible for a door prize. If anyone is selling family books, they are encouraged to bring them. This event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Surry Community College in the A building, downstairs in the Knight’s Grill and dining area. Laptops are encouraged to bring since the campus has wireless Internet. Refreshments will be provided by Surry County Genealogy Association.
n MCA Pride Ride and Poker Run will be starting at Millennium Charter Academy, 500 Old Springs Road, Mount Airy, with registration from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. The ride will leave at 11 a.m. There will be a cookout, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. n The Mount Airy Public Library will be having its annual yard sale to benefit the Young Adult section of the library from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone who would like to donate items for the yard sale should bring them to the library on April 16 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
n The Mount Airy Restoration Foundation will have a yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Moore House. Sale items are needed. If anyone would like to donate, call Betty Wright at 786-4512. Yard sale items can also be left on the front porch of the Moore House. Due to limited storage space, large appliances and magazines are not preferred. Receipts will be given for larger items donated. Proceeds will be used for maintenance of the grounds at the Moore House.

n Home Vegetable Production Workshop will be held at the N.C. Cooperative Extension, 210 N. Main St., Dobson, from 3 to 5 p.m. This workshop will teach how to grow early season vegetables and planting techniques to stretch a harvest by stagger planting. n The Blue Ridge CareNet Counseling Center is sponsoring a dinner and silent auction at 6:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. The meal is being catered by Gondola Italian Restaurant and will include chicken parmesan, salad, dessert and a drink. The evening also will include a guest speaker, the Rev. Paul Mullen, from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. His chosen topic, “What Keeps You Awake At Night,” will offer practical tips on stress management. Tickets are $20 per person and all proceeds will benefit non-insured and under-insured clients, while providing and maintaining professional counseling and the ministry of offering opportunities of growth, hope and healing in this community.
