If the East Surry baseball players let their lack of a day off bother them, they sure didn’t show it in their 9-2 shellacking of East Wilkes Friday evening.
After a scoreless first inning pitched by East Surry pitcher Evan Smith, the Cardinals came out hot on offense, scoring three runs by timely hitting and base-to-base baseball.
“That gave us the early momentum when we were able to score first, and put some pressure on East Wilkes,” East Surry coach Barry Hall said. “We put ourselves in a good position early in the game, and we kept adding to it.”
Though East Wilkes had eight hits (one fewer than East Surry), the team only managed two runs. Hall attributed that to some defensive stops and good pitching by Smith, and his reliever Blake Gilley.
East Surry was up 5-2 going into the sixth inning, and Hall said the team was still looking to score runs to add some padding to its lead.
That looked doubtful after the first two batters struck out. Kyle Shinault was then hit by a pitch to get the ball rolling for the Cardinals.
East Wilkes made two of its three errors in the bottom of the sixth allowing East Surry base runners to speed around the bases for two of the runs.
Jordan Miller capped off the inning with a two-run homerun blast to left field.
“We had a nice little two out rally,” Hall said.
East Surry’s next game will be at Starmount Wednesday.
