Then on Tuesday, another break-in at Main Oak Emporium resulted in the loss of miscellaneous jewelry items for which no value was listed. A door was pried open during that incident as well by someone who exited the rear of the business with the stolen property.
n A case of larceny by employee was reported Tuesday at JCPenney in Mayberry Mall. Police were advised that a female worker fraudulently entered refunds at the store and pocketed the money. The sum involved has not been disclosed. Police records indicate that the wrongdoing could have occurred over a period of several months. No arrest has been reported.
n Property valued at about $2,950 was reported missing Monday from a unit at Arsco Self Storage on North Andy Griffith Parkway. Someone entered a storage unit rented by Tommy Dale Wright of Banner Street and stole various mechanic tools, 8-inch and 10-inch speakers, an air rifle, a kerosene heater, plastic totes containing miscellaneous items and weedeaters. Damage estimated at $50 occurred to the door of the unit. Arsco Self Storage also is listed as the victim of another crime reported Saturday, which involved the theft of a 15-inch color television set after a lock was removed from a storage unit. Information was gained on a suspect vehicle, a white 1999 Ford F-150 pickup. Both cases are still under investigation.
n A pair of break-ins also have been reported in recent days at another business on North Andy Griffith Parkway, Leonard Aluminum Utility Buildings. In the first case discovered on March 25, winches, a drill and other property with a total value of $1,000 were taken after someone pried open a door lock. In the second break-in reported on Monday, items worth $1,900 were stolen after a door was pried open, including a Hewlett-Packard Thin Client computer and two diesel programmers. Police continue to investigate.
n Mitchell Dean Carpenter Jr., 23, of 101 Parrish Lane, was arrested Monday on two felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses. Carpenter turned himself in on warrants that had been filed in the wake of two mid-March incidents in which he allegedly attempted to use an altered prescription and another falsified document to obtain medication from Kerr Drug on Independence Boulevard and Wally’s Pharmacy on Old Rockford Street. Carpenter was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $5,000 secured bond and is to be in District Court on May 27.
n Gary Dewayne Bowman Jr., 46, of 287 Greentown Road, is facing violations of larceny and speeding after a Monday traffic stop on Wards Gap Road. In addition to being cited for speeding, police discovered that an outstanding warrant for larceny had been issued against Bowman on March 19, with no details regarding that violation listed. Bowman is free on a written promise to appear in Surry District Court on May 6.
n Joseph Allen Cook, 39, of 1575 Dan Valley Road, Claudville, Va., was arrested as a fugitive from justice on Saturday after police encountered him during a traffic stop on Riverside Drive. A routine check led to the discovery of an active warrant from the Patrick County, Va., Sheriff’s Office on an unspecified charge. Cook was held in the Surry County Jail under a $5,000 secured bond and is facing a May 27 court appearance.
n Felipe Soto Jr., 21, of 186 Burton St., was charged last Friday with felonious possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of a Schedule VI controlled substance after police investigated a suspicious vehicle. Soto was jailed in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond, with his court date set for May 26.
n Cathy Darlene Macy, 51, of 654 Willow St., is facing a school attendance law violation. Macy was served with a criminal summons in the case last Friday, which was initiated by personnel at Mount Airy Middle School. She is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on April 30.
n A larceny was reported last Friday at the Mount Airy ABC Store, where an unidentified female is said to have concealed a bottle of Smirnoff black cherry vodka in a large handbag before leaving the store without paying. The case remains open for further investigation.
