John Shelton, director of Surry County Emergency Services, reported yesterday that Donald Gray Shelton, 46, of 154 Pine Drive, Mount Airy, died of multi-system trauma shortly after being transferred to the hospital.
According to the ES director, Donald was traveling east on Haystack Road when his Jeep left the roadway and struck a tree. John said the accident was called in at 8:30 p.m. and an off-duty medic was the first to arrive on the scene. Emergency personnel with Pine Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, Mount Airy Rescue Squad, Dobson Rescue Squad and Surry EMS responded to the wreck.
John said Donald was pinned in the vehicle for 15 to 20 minutes before emergency workers were able to get him out. Although medics called for AirCare, John said the helicopter was still a good distance out when Donald was extricated, so he was transferred to the hospital by ground transport.
The emergency services director said Donald went into cardiac arrest once he arrived at the hospital and died shortly thereafter.
John said it has been at least a month since Surry County had its last traffic-related fatality.
Trooper Brent Jones with the North Carolina Highway Patrol could not be reached for comment on the cause of the accident.
