Ericka Watson scored the first goal and the last goal, while Beasly Nester and Anbi Moore scored the goals in between.
East Wilkes scored two goals before Mount Airy could get much of anything going in the first half, but the Granite Bears didn’t stay down for long.
“We didn’t let the early two goals get to us and we countered,” Mount Airy coach Andrew Howard said. “Our girls picked up their play and their confidence was high.”
Even with the injury to starting goalie Morgan Hawks in the first half, the Cardinals didn’t manage to score a goal in the second half. Skylar Davis finished off the game and Howard said he was pleased with the way she and the whole defense stepped up.
After halftime the Bears concentrated on not letting East Wilkes’ speedy players beat them down the middle of the field by playing back and staying aware of where the Cardinals’ main scorers were.
Howard said that Summer Hamilton played a big role in the win for the Bears.
“She put a lot of the balls up that we scored on, and I thought she played really well holding down the middle for us.”
Mount Airy will play its next game tomorrow in Dobson at Surry Central.
KERNERSVILLE — East Surry broke out of its spot in the middle of the pack to tie Bishop McGuinness at Pine Knolls in Northwest 1A/2A golf action Wednesday.
The Cardinals had yet to have a top two finish in four overall events on the season, but took home a share of the team win along with the Villains with a score of 147.
North Surry lost a few spots on conference leader Bishop with a fourth place 153, while Mount Airy and Surry Central finished seventh and eighth, respectively.
The Cardinals were spearheaded by their No. 1 seed Seth Covington, who took home the top individual score with a three-under-par 33.
North Surry’s Justin Young finished in a three-way tie for second with Luke Jones of West Stokes and Stanhope Johnson of Bishop with a one-under-par 35, while the Greyhounds’ Taylor Coalson and the Cardinals’ Dustin Holder finished in a three-way tie with Mark Sowinski of Bishop with a one-over-par 37.
Wednesday’s finish pushes Bishop farther into the overall conference lead over North Surry and North Stokes, with the Vikings now trailing by 16 strokes, while the Greyhounds sit 20 strokes behind.
East Surry made a push in the 1A portion of the conference after its first strong overall team performance of the season.
The top two finishers in both the 1A and 2A classifications advance to the team state tournament and the Cardinals made headway by gaining six strokes on North Stokes, who so far sits behind Bishop in the second 1A tournament spot.
Northwest golfers will have an entire week off before meeting next Monday at Pilot Knob Park with East Surry hosting.
