Students touched by the life of a drama teacher are planning a reunion this summer to honor the man for the difference he made in their lives.
The reunion will honor drama teacher Don Mance who taught at Mount Airy High School from 1970 to 1984.
Dikki Ellis and Susan Hemric are organizing the event, and at this point they are trying to find out who is interested in attending the event. The group has already got 58 fans on its Facebook page, which can be found by searching for D’COMAH’S under the group’s category.
Ellis said students at that time were members of the D’COMAHS, or Drama Club of Mount Airy High School. Ellis said the students also want to thank Mance’s wife, Sue, for all of her contributions.
Mance promoted competition, which in turned allowed hundreds of students to obtain scholarships which allowed them to pursue careers in the drama or performing arts fields. Ellis said Mance played a role in getting him a scholarship to the N.C. School of the Arts. Ellis has gone on to be a clown in the Big Apple Circus in New York, N.Y.
“It will be a journey back in time. We want everyone to come. We don’t want to leave anyone out. So anybody who worked back stage, on costumes or with lighting, everyone is invited,” Ellis said.
The reunion will be held on Aug. 14 at Cross Creek Country Club from 6 to 11 p.m. The cost is $30 for the first person. Spouses are $25.
Organizers are asking that those who are interested in attending to RSVP by July 14 and make checks out to: Susan Hemric-reunion and mail to: Seivers Studio, P.O. Box 581, Mount Airy, NC 27030, include an e-mail address of quick confirmation.
