Officers with the Surry County Sheriff’s Office have made arrests in the past two weeks which have led to several drug and larceny charges.
A South Carolina man was arrested on March 14 and charged with drug trafficking charges after a Surry County deputy arrested him on a charge of driving a stolen car.
Sheriff Graham Atkinson said the incident began when a deputy saw Jamel Clifton Allen driving a 2004 Nissan Altima on Pine Ridge Road around 10:30 p.m. The vehicle matched the description of a car that had been stolen in Hillsville, Va., earlier that day, so the deputy pulled the car over. The driver allegedly smelled of alcohol and was taken into custody. When the suspect was searched at the jail, deputies found nearly 30 grams of cocaine hidden on him.
Allen, 33, of Ladson, S.C., was charged with felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle, two counts of felony trafficking cocaine, and felony possession of cocaine on jail premises. North Carolina Highway Patrol also charged Allen with driving while impaired. He was confined in the Surry County Detention Center under a $60,000 secured bond. Allen will appear in court on April 5.
The day before the Allen incident, a Mount Airy man was arrested after Atkinson said he broke into a neighbor’s home and stole a gun and keys to a vehicle.
Robert Gray Kreger, 32, of 126B Herring Street, Mount Airy, allegedly broke into his neighbor's home on March 10. Atkinson said he allegedly stole a gun and keys to a Jeep, then he removed the tags from another vehicle at the residence and left in the stolen Jeep.
Winston-Salem police later stopped the vehicle and arrested Kreger for felony possession of stolen property. He gave the officers information about the stolen gun, which led to a later arrest at a relative's residence in Winston-Salem. Kreger was then charged with felony breaking and entering, felony larceny, felony larceny of a motor vehicle, felony larceny of a firearm, and felony possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is free on bond.
