DOBSON — Officials with both the Surry County Sheriff’s Office and the Mount Airy Police Department worked in cooperation in what lead to a drug bust that netted 10 pounds of marijuana and $1,500 cash.

Deborah Ann Simmons, 37, and Marcus Clark Lawson, 18, both of 874 Holly Springs Road, were taken into custody at their home Wednesday morning during the course of an outgoing investigation by both the sheriff’s office and the Mount Airy Police Department.

Two original drug buys happened in the city, according to Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson, then the persons of interested moved to the location in Holly Springs.

“Thanks to shared information, the two agencies were able to work together. I’m really pleased with how it all turned out,” said Surry County Sheriff Graham Atkinson.

Mount Airy Police Chief Dale Watson echoed the sheriff’s statement.

“This came about through teamwork. We set out with a goal and everyone did a great job in the process,” Watson said.

A stolen handgun also was recovered in the raid at the home. Watson said the gun was stolen in a breaking and entering in the city limits about three weeks ago.

Atkinson said this is one of the largest marijuana busts in more than a year. He said the drug culture in the area seems to be leaning more heavily toward cocaine and methamphetamine.

Both Simmons and Lawson had been released on bond pending a court date. The investigation is still ongoing.
