n Dobson Rescue Squad Inc. hosts bingo with cash prizes every Saturday night. The bingo is at the Dobson Rescue Squad at U.S. 601 and Rockford Road. Early birds start at 5 p.m. Regular pack begins at 7 p.m. The late bingo depends on the number of players. The regular pack is nine games for $20. The players game is $5. n Jamming in Jamsburg in Lambsburg, Va., is held every Friday from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Community Center. Bluegrass, old-time, gospel and other types of music will be playing. Situated at the foot of the Sugar Loaf Mountain and surrounded by the mountains makes a beautiful backdrop for the jam. There’s plenty of space indoors and outdoors. There are concessions with the clean entertainment for the whole family. All musicians and music lovers are invited to come play, dance or just listen and enjoy. n The Surry Arts Council presents free fiddle, guitar and banjo lessons for kids downstairs at the Andy Griffith Playhouse every Thursday evening. Master musician Jim Vipperman teaches fiddle at 5:30 p.m., and guitar and banjo at 6:15 p.m. No sign-up required, instruments are available for use during the lessons. n Join the Foothills Arts Council for The Artists Forum on the first and third Thursdays of each month at 5:30 p.m. This is an informal artists group for anyone interested in exploring their creative side. n The Woman’s Club of Mount Airy meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. The club is seeking new members. The Woman’s Club of Mount Airy is a member of the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs of North Carolina. n Clayworks is having open studio for ceramics in Elkin on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon on Front Street. n Bring children ages 4 to 8 to the new Hands-On Children’s Gallery at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History for crafts, stories and activities. Reservations are strongly encouraged. n The Surry Arts Council presents clogging workshops and classes taught by Samantha Wilhelmi, a very talented young clogger. These clogging lessons are perfect for all ages and dance abilities, from beginner to advanced. Workshops will be held before the monthly Old-Time Dances in the Old-Time Music Hall, below the Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy, 218 Rockford St., from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The workshop is free with the purchase of a dance ticket. The dance starts at 7 p.m. and admission is $5. Popular old-time dance band The Slate Mountain Ramblers will provide the music for the dance. The Old-Time Dance and Clogging Workshop are held on the first Saturday of every month. Also, Wilhelmi is teaching clogging classes every Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Surry Arts Council dance room. n The Greater Mount Airy Area Habitat for Humanity is offering free trainings for its new homeowners. There trainings are also open to the public. n The Surry Arts Council presents The Andy Griffith Museum. The museum is adjacent to the Andy Griffith Playhouse, 218 Rockford St., Mount Airy. Eng and Chang Bunker, the world famous pair of conjoined twins, lived most of their lives and raised their families in Mount Airy. Dozens of Bunker descendants still reside in the area. The Surry Arts Council operates an exhibit on the renowned Siamese Twins. The collection is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Admission is a minimum donation of $3 per person. n Neal Brower, author of “Mayberry 101,” will be giving a series of lectures on “The Andy Griffith Show” this spring at the Andy Griffith Museum, 218 Rockford St., Mount Airy. Brower is a great scholar of “The Andy Griffith Show,” having taught a continuing education course entitled “The Andy Griffith Show: An In-Depth Study” more than 20 times at North Carolina community colleges. Each lecture is $10 and includes admission the Andy Griffith Museum. n Join The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History the first Friday of every month for fun and fantasy as stories related to the museum’s exhibits are read. Explore history and nature through books, activities and more.

n Enjoy the flowers of spring at New River Trail State Park with a senior van tour on April 13 and 14 or April 20 and 21. Each guided tour covers 40 miles of trail and includes views of Claytor Lake, the New River and Chestnut Creek. A box lunch is included. The tour begins at 8:45 a.m. at Foster Falls and ends around 4:15 p.m. back at Foster Falls. This is for ages 55 and older. The cost is $25 per person. n Lunch and learning sessions will be held every Wednesday, March 17 through April 21, at noon at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History. These sessions will feature a regional musician and/or singer who will speak about the role roots music has played in his/her life as well as the importance of roots music in our community. n The McKameys will be in concert at Carroll County High School, Hillsville, Va., at 2 p.m. The concert is a benefit for the Free Clinic of the Twin Counties, who provide free health care to the low-income uninsured residents of Carroll, Grayson and the city of Galax in Virginia. Tickets will be sold in advance at all Gullion Christian Bookstore locations for $10 per person. Tickets can also be purchased at the door. n The Carroll County Historical Society will feature a slide show presentation commemorating the Carroll County Courthouse Tragedy that occurred on this date in 1912. The speaker will be Ron Hall, who spent a number of years researching the event and writing a book, “The Carroll County Courthouse Tragedy.” The presentation will include the story of the event, its causes and the aftermath, as well as nearly a hundred vintage photographs of the participants and the area. The presentation will be held in the Historic Carroll County Courthouse in Hillsville, Va., and will start at 3 p.m. The program will be repeated at 4:15 p.m. in necessary, since seating is limited.

n “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Gertrude Smith House, performed by Brack and Angela Llewellyn and the NoneSuch Playmakers. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

n LifeLine Pregnancy Help Center will have a class for volunteers from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both dates. The training will be held at Salem Baptist Church in Dobson. The cost is $30 to cover materials. n The March meeting of the Mount Airy Public Library’s Picture Books book club will be held at 6 p.m. The book/movie for March is “Nights in Rodanthe” by Nicholas Sparks. Copies of the book are available for checkout and the movie is free.

n A benefit variety show and pasta buffet will be held at 6 p.m. at 308 Bistro, N. Main Street, Mount Airy. The cost is $10 for adults and $3 for children. Proceeds will go to Heather Elliott for medical expenses.

n A Spring Bowling Party for ages 55 and better will be held at noon at Mount Airy Lanes. Cost of $5 includes three games with shoe rental, lunch from the grill and dessert. n Operation Medicine Drop and Mount Airy Police Department is offering a chance for the public to dispose of unwanted or expired drugs in the upper parking area of Wal-Mart from 2 to 6 p.m. Biohazard materials or medical accessories will not be taken. Along with police, members of the local pharmacy and medical communities will be on hand to assist with handling of the drugs turned in and provide brochures and other information to the public about related issues.

n A benefit hot dog supper and cake auction to benefit Donnie Holyfield will be held from 6 p.m. until at the White Plains Ruritan Building, the old fire department. All proceeds are for medical expenses associated with his upcoming liver transplant.

n A Doggie Easter Egg Hunt will be held at Fisher River Park in Dobson in the amphitheater area from 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 per dog. Humans enter free. A “Doggie Spring Fashion Show” will be held at 2:30 p.m. by Froo Froo Pet Boutique. There will be a “Best Easter Bonnet” contest and “Best Easter Outfit” contest. All dogs will be winners. Easter eggs will contain dog treats or winning numbers. Dogs must be on a leash and have proof of current rabies vaccination. Drinks and snacks will be available. All proceeds go to Mayberry 4 Paws and People Helping Pets for the rescue, spay, neuter of abandoned, neglected, abused dogs and cats.

n The Shakespeare-To-Go traveling troupe from the N.C. Shakespeare Festival in High Point will give a 60-minute presentation of “The Taming of the Shrew” at 11 a.m. in the teaching auditorium at Surry Community College.

n “Go Fly A Kite Day” will be held at the Mount Airy Public Library. Participants are encouraged to design and make the kites that they will fly on the library lawn. This event will begin at 3:30 p.m.

n April is National Poetry month. The Mount Airy Public Library encourages English/Language Arts teachers to submit poetry entries by their students, to be read by the students at the library. Poems should be submitted by teachers to the library on March 26. The library invites the students to come to the library to read them on April 20 at 6 p.m.

n The Senior Center will be going to Harrah’s Casino in Cherokee. Pick-up in Mount Airy will be at 8 a.m. and in Jonesville at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $40 and participants will receive a $20 coin return at arrival. Participants must pre-register and pre-pay. n Ararat, Va., Volunteer Fire Department will be having a Longaberger bingo at the Ararat Ruritan Building. There are 60 chances to win for a $20 donation. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and games will start at 7 p.m. Food will be available. There will also be door prizes and the grand prize is the Longaberger Library Table valued at $250. n Judith Duff, internationally acclaimed potter specializing in wood-fired and Japanese Shino technique, will present a two-day demonstration workshop in E162, Surry Community College ceramics studio. n Cruise In For Christ will be having a cruise in and benefit car show at New Beginning Baptist Church from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to benefit Donnie Holyfield. Bring old cars, hot rods, trucks, bikes and tractors. The entry fee is $10. There will be trophies for six categories. Events include, live music, preaching, bake sale, yard sale, 50/50 drawing, games, door prizes and hamburgers, hot dogs and cold drinks. The rain date for this event is May 1. n National Library Week will be celebrated at the Mount Airy Public Library. The library will be announcing its essay contest winners during this week and beginning its Spring Book Sale. All money raised during the book sale will help fund projects throughout the year.

April 13

n The Mount Airy Public Library’s Picture Books book club meets to watch the movie “My Sister’s Keeper” at 6 p.m. The book will be available for checkout at the library and the movie is free.

April 14

n In support of the Global Language consortium, specifically the Brazilian culture, a one-hour program on Capoeira Dance will be performed by the Nego Gato Dance Company from 11 a.m. until noon at the outdoor patio area of the Knight’s Grill at Surry Community College. Capoeira combines the various forms of music, dance, acrobatics, martial arts, theater and philosophy into a total mind/body discipline, whose roots originated in the Salvadoran and Brazilian regions of the world. This group has performed at the Kennedy Center.

April 17

n The Surry County Genealogical Association has arranged to host a regional Swap Meet. This event is open to local genealogy and family history groups as well as individuals with an interest in genealogy of our surrounding region. This event is free. Everyone is eligible for a door prize. If anyone is selling family books, they are encouraged to bring them. This event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Surry Community College in the A building, downstairs in the Knight’s Grill and dining area. Laptops are encouraged to bring since the campus has wireless internet. Refreshments will be provided by Surry County Genealogy Association.

n MCA Pride Ride and Poker Run will he starting at Millennium Charter Academy, 500 Old Springs Road, Mount Airy, with registration from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. The ride will leave at 11 a.m. There will be a cook out, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. n The second annual “Yadkin Valley Has Talent” vocal competition will be held at Lila Swaim Park in Jonesville during the “Jonesville Jubilee.” First place receives a recording session, 25 CDs, 25 photos and bios. n The Mount Airy Public Library’s teen theater group, The Dewey Decimal Players, will be presenting “Fairytale Theatre” at 3:30 p.m. This event helps the library celebrate Children’s Book Week is for all ages and is free.

n The Mount Airy Public Library’s May meeting of the Picture Books book club will be held to watch the May movie at 6 p.m. The May movie/book is “Julie and Julia.” Books are available for checkout at the library.

May 13

n The Mount Airy Public Library will have visiting children’s book author Sarah Sullivan at the library. She will be leading a writing workshop for older elementary students. This workshop is free.

May 24

n Mount Airy Public Library’s Book Chats book club will meet at 1 p.m. to discuss the books participants are reading. This event is open to everyone.

May 27

n The Mount Airy Public Library’s Community book club meets at 7 p.m.
