Athletic-minded seniors in the area are gearing up for competition this spring, with a special registration session for the Yadkin Valley Senior Games planned today in Mount Airy.

The Surry Senior Center, 215 Jones School Road, is the site of today’s signups from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., although those wishing to participate can still register through the end of this month.

Those signing up early can save money on the registration fee for the senior games, which will provide an opportunity for participants to compete in a variety of athletic events as well as visual, heritage, literary and performing-arts activities.

The Yadkin Valley Senior Games, scheduled from May 6 through June 3 at different venues in the area, is one of 53 such events held in localities around the state under the auspices of the North Carolina Senior Games organization.

It is a non-profit group dedicated to providing year-round health promotions and education for adults 55 years and older, which is sponsored statewide by the North Carolina Division of Aging.

The upcoming competition for Surry and Yadkin seniors will include track and field events as well as golf and other sports, and is open to those who will be at least 55 as of Dec. 31, 2010.

Easy To Register

An $8 early bird registration fee, which is good through March 19, covers participation in the majority of the athletic and artistic events as well as a participation T-shirt. It also includes admission to the Silver Arts Exhibition and Silver Follies Show planned as part of the games, lunch at the opening ceremonies, lunch at track and field events and a goodie bag filled with special items.

Those signing up from March 20-31 will pay $12 to participate.

However, due to the nature of some of the athletic events (such as bowling and golf), an additional fee is required.

The deadline to register for the 2010 Yadkin Valley Senior Games is March 31 at 4 p.m.

In order to make signups more convenient for seniors across the two-county area, senior games organizers have set up a variety of registration sites.

Entry forms are available at locations including Reeves Community Center, the Surry Arts Council and Surry County Senior Center, all in Mount Airy.

Armfield Civic Center in Pilot Mountain is another registration site, along with Surry County Parks and Recreation in Dobson. Sites in Elkin include Elkin Recreation Center and Mountain Valley Hospice.

Entry forms may be dropped off at a registration location or participants can mail the forms and appropriate fees to YVSG, 118 Hamby Road, Suite 336, Dobson, NC 27017.

Information on how to be a participant, sponsor or volunteer at the senior games is available from any of the listed facilities, or the North Carolina Senior Games Web site at www.ncseniorgames.org.

Further details on today’s special signup session at Surry County Senior Center are available at 786-6155, ext. 225.
