Sheriff Graham Atkinson said Rowland Washington Moore III of 154 Cedar Ridge Trail, was already in the Surry County Detention Center on other charges when officers searched his home earlier this week and found eight Mount Airy News and two Winston-Salem Journal newspaper machines in his bedroom.
“We received information that he had been involved in stealing newspaper racks and breaking into drink machines and that a quantity of the racks were still at his home,” the sheriff said. “We were also told that he was growing marijuana inside the house.”
When deputies searched the home they found 12 marijuana plants in addition to the stolen newspaper racks, Atkinson reported.
Moore is charged with seven counts of misdemeanor larceny, 10 counts of misdemeanor possession of stolen property, and with breaking and entering and misdemeanor larceny of a coin-operated drink machine at Simmons Grocery on Old U.S. 52 South.
A narcotics investigation is still under way, according to Atkinson, and other individuals also may be charged in the machine thefts and break-ins.
Moore’s bond was set at $15,000 secured, and he will appear in court on April 27 regarding the larceny and breaking and entering charges.
