The Surry Arts Council is hosting the renowned acoustic group Molasses Creek on Friday. The group is from Ocracoke Island and has played together for more than 15 years.
Molasses Creek has blending harmonies, blazing instrumentals and a quirky sense of humor. “Our State” magazine describes it as “a rollicking group that takes its audience on a whirlwind journey with every performance.” Part folk, part Americana, part bluegrass and country, its musical influences include Doc Watson, Norman Blake, Dolly Parton, Gillian Welch and many other Americana artists who are all reflected by its unique sound.
Molasses Creek has performed with Garrison Keillor on “A Prairie Home Companion,” as well as at festivals and venues all across the country. Molasses Creek also was featured in the 2008 film “Nights in Rodanthe.”
Molasses Creek’s roster includes Gary Mitchell (guitar and vocals), Fiddler Dave Tweedie (fiddle and vocals), Lou Castro (dobro, bass and vocals), Marcy Brenner (mandolin, bass, vocals) and Gerald Hampton (mandolin and bass).
