But it wasn’t pretty.
The visiting Cardinals committed five errors in their 5-4 victory over Elkin Monday, behind a strong pitching performance by Troy Jessup and some timely hitting by Andrew Hunter and Kyle Shinault.
“Tonight was a typical early season game,” said East Surry Coach Barry Hall. “Lots of errors because both teams haven’t practiced much. We will try to get it fixed before the next game.”
Elkin jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the contest, then both teams went scoreless until the fifth inning. That is when the Cardinals took control, scoring three. After a scoreless sixth, East Surry struck for another two runs for a 5-2 lead before holding off an Elkin rally for the final 5-4 score.
Jessup started the game and earned the victory, giving up a single hit before being relieved by Shinault.
Hunter was 1-for-3 on the night, clubbing a one-run homer and scoring two runs, while Shinault was 2-for-2 with two doubles, a run and three RBIs.
