At the start of the meeting, board members will read a resolution regarding the establishment of the Jeffrey R. Hall Scholarship. The board will be asked to endorse the establishment of the scholarship to provide the opportunity for graduates of East Surry, North Surry and Surry Central high schools who want to pursue their education at Surry Community College towards a career in agriculture, law enforcement, building trades and education.
The board will be asked to approve a funding request from North Carolina Association of Educators delegates to attend the state convention. For several years, the board has approved funding of substitutes for the delegates for the Friday of the convention.
Board members will receive information about the Carolina College Advising Corps. The Corps places recent University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill graduates in adviser positions in high schools across North Carolina to help students plan their college searches, complete admissions and financial-aid applications. The 2010-11 Corps expects to have 21 advisers serving in over 50 high schools across the state.
The board will take another look at the Surry Early College High School of Design calendar proposal for the 2010-11 school year. The calendar has been on the table for 30 days and has not received any comments. The board will also look at the 2009-10 school calendar to see changes made due to inclement weather.
Meadowview Middle School’s assistant principal and booster club will present a request to the board for permission to place a building near the football/soccer field for use with concessions. The building will be donated to the school.
The board will also hear a report on school construction as well as reports from the board chairman and the superintendent.
The board will also recognize a number of people at the meeting.
