Seniors Rebekah Sikes, Suzie Santucci, junior Molly Hamilton and sophomore Hannah Tompkins were pegged as four of the top 10 players in the league.
“All four obviously played exceptionally well but the real key to our season has been the fact that these four, as well as their teammates, play for the team and not for individual statistics,” coach John Peters said. “But the rest of the coaches in the league still recognize their production on the court.”
The Runnin’ Patriots girls sit at 23-2 overall heading into the weekend’s NCHEAC state tournament. The Runnin’ Pats defeated Cabarrus last week to take the Western Regional championship.
Surry Runnin’ Patriot girls coach John Peters also picked up coach of the year honors in his first season on the bench.
Athletic Director Todd Hill said Peters did a good job of using the talent he inherited and keeping the winning tradition in order.
“This group of kids has had three different coaches in three years and for John to come in and have a lot of seniors and keep team unity was important,” Hill said. “He had a lot of talent, which is hard to handle, but he did a good job of managing his talent and instilling teamwork in the kids. He did a great job selling the team concept.”
From the boys side, Luke Hamilton was the only Runnin’ Pat to be named to the all-conference team in 2009-2010.
Hamilton, a four-time all-conference pick, was an all-around force for Surry as he averaged 21 points per game, 9.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals, 2 blocks and 3 assists.
Hamilton’s father, Lin, is the Runnin’ Pats’ coach and when Luke heads to Gordon College above Boston, Mass., next season, coach and dad will be disappointed to see his best player leave.
“Luke was determined from the get-go,” Lin Hamilton said. “He was determined to get better in the offseason to improve all aspects of his game. Just his intensity. I knew he would be a good player but I’m really surprised how much work he’s put into it. He’s athletic, but he’s had to work at it.”
