This is the last week to file for many county and state offices, and so far this week only one candidate has filed in Surry County. Two people have filed to run in the race for the U.S. Senate.
Yesterday Eddie Harris, a Republican from the Mountain Park community, filed to run for the south district seat of the Surry County Board of Commissioners. He will run against incumbent Jim Harrell Jr., a Democrat from Elkin, who filed last week for re-election.
U.S. Senator Richard Burr filed for re-election on Monday with the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
In a press release, he said, “The people of North Carolina have given me the wonderful privilege of serving our state and our country in the United States Senate. Six years ago, I made a commitment to serve North Carolinians. Only North Carolinians can determine if I have upheld that commitment and give me the opportunity to continue my service to this state.”
Also filing on Monday to run for the U.S. Senate seat was Elaine Marshall, a Democrat. She serves as North Carolina’s Secretary of State at this time. In 1997 she became the first woman elected to statewide executive office in North Carolina.
Filing for all county and state partisan offices, Surry County Board of Education seats, all judicial seats and district attorney positions end Friday at noon.
