PILOT MOUNTAIN — Some sections of storm-ravaged Pilot Mountain State Park have reopened, while others remain closed due to the recent effects of snow, ice and wind.

Officials closed the park to all visitors on Feb. 5, when Surry County was hit by a winter storm. High winds the next week left crews having to clear away debris from fallen trees, with icy roads persisting on the facility’s main road and various access routes. After about two weeks of work, the park resumed limited use several days ago.

The summit road is now open, but could be closed periodically until Friday for removal of additional trees considered hazards. Since areas of ice and snow also remain, park visitors are urged to use caution.

All trails in the park’s mountain section are now open except for Jomeokee Trail.

The south side of the river section (Yadkin County) also is open.

Areas that remain closed include the north river section, all river section bridle trails and the campground road.

All bridle trails will remain closed after the ice melts until their surfaces dry out, park officials say, since horseback riding during wet conditions damages the trails and causes severe erosion. To ensure that these paths are available for continued use, the public is urged to abide by the temporary closure.

Sections of the park that remain closed are off limits to all uses, officials stress.

Local personnel, including rangers and volunteers, have been aided in the clean-up effort by workers from other state parks.
