PILOT MOUNTAIN — During their regular monthly meeting, Pilot Mountain town board members heard good news from Marshall Atkins, chairman of the ABC board.

Atkins told the board that during January, the store brought in net sales of $59,900.

“That’s considerably more than we had budgeted,” Atkins said.

He said February sales are expected to come in around the same amount. He said the ABC board had budgeted for around $30,000 in net sales for both months.

“Everything is looking good,” Atkins said.

Mayor Earl Sheppard said he appreciated all of the hard work from the ABC board and staff.

Atkins said the store is drawing customers from a larger than anticipated area. Commissioner Carolyn Boyles asked if the Mount Airy or Dobson stores had seen any decrease in sales since the opening of the ABC store in Pilot Mountain in December.

Atkins said from the reports he has seen, both the Mount Airy and Dobson store sales were down in January. But he said he couldn’t attribute that to the new store in Pilot Mountain being open.

“A lot of it is attributed to the economy,” he said.

Atkins asked the board to attend the grand opening of the store, which is set for Friday morning. There will be a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m.

Also during the meeting, Mayor Sheppard swore-in new Finance Officer Charles D. Keeley.

Town Manager Blair Knox asked the board to approve the transfer of two cemetery plots from Ray Collins to Ruby and Charles Wall. The board unanimously approved the transfer.

Knox said the bids had been approved for the Mountain View Drive sewer extension. Landform Construction won the bid at $48,600.

Commissioner Linda Needham was absent from the meeting because she was involved in a traffic accident recently and is hospitalized in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mayor Sheppard urged the board to keep her in its prayers.
