n Dobson Rescue Squad Inc. hosts bingo with cash prizes every Saturday night. The bingo is at the Dobson Rescue Squad at U.S. 601 and Rockford Road. n Jamming in Jamsburg in Lambsburg, Va., is held every Friday from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Community Center. Bluegrass, old-time, gospel and other types of music will be playing. Situated at the foot of the Sugar Loaf Mountain and surrounded by the mountains makes a beautiful backdrop for the jam. There’s plenty of space indoors and outdoors. There are concessions with the clean entertainment for the whole family. All musicians and music lovers are invited to come play, dance or just listen and enjoy. n The Surry Arts Council presents free fiddle, guitar and banjo lessons for kids downstairs at the Andy Griffith Playhouse every Thursday evening. Master musician Jim Vipperman teaches fiddle at 5:30 p.m., and guitar and banjo at 6:15 p.m. No sign-up required, instruments are available for use during the lessons. n The Surry Arts Council presents clogging workshops and classes taught by Samantha Wilhelmi, a very talented young clogger. These clogging lessons are perfect for all ages and dance abilities, from beginner to advanced. Workshops will be held before the monthly Old-Time Dances in the Old-Time Music Hall, below the Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy, 218 Rockford St., from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The workshop is free with the purchase of a dance ticket. The dance starts at 7 p.m. and admission is $5. Popular old-time dance band The Slate Mountain Ramblers will provide the music for the dance. The Old-Time Dance and Clogging Workshop are held on the first Saturday of every month. n The Greater Mount Airy Area Habitat for Humanity is offering free trainings for its new homeowners. There trainings are also open to the public. n The Surry Arts Council presents The Andy Griffith Museum. The museum is adjacent to the Andy Griffith Playhouse, 218 Rockford St., Mount Airy. Eng and Chang Bunker, the world famous pair of conjoined twins, lived most of their lives and raised their families in Mount Airy. Dozens of Bunker descendants still reside in the area. The Surry Arts Council operates an exhibit on the renowned Siamese Twins. The collection is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Admission is a minimum donation of $3 per person. n The Surry County Cooperative Extension will have “Cook Smart, Eat Smart” cooking school on Feb. 23. Participants will learn how to prepare simple, healthy and delicious meals within a budget. n The Pastor’s Aid of Chestnut Ridge Progressive Primitive Baptist Church will hold its annual “100 Men in Black” service. Everyone is invited to come and join the fellowship for a celebration of Black History Month. The special guest will be the Martin Luther King Jr. Male Chorus from Charleston, W.Va. The group will be at the 11 a.m. service and the 3 p.m. service. Martin Staunton, anchorman of WVNS Fox News, will be the guest speaker in the afternoon. n The Lambsburg, Va., Ruritan Club will be having a soup and sandwich lunch from noon to 2 p.m. Take outs are available.

n Historian Tom Perry will discuss various subjects including life during the Civil War for the slaves and “free people of color” through the Civil Rights Movement of the 20th century at the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History. Frederick Douglas, Booker T. Washington, John Hope Franklin and Martin Luther King Jr. will also be included in this program. This program is free to the public, but donations will be accepted.

n The Mount Airy Public Library will be participating once again by celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday with Read Across America Day. The library will have guest readers of Dr. Seuss stories beginning at 9 a.m. and the last reader is scheduled for noon. Police Chief Dale Watson, Sheriff Graham Atkinson and local storyteller Brack Llewellyn are signed up to read.

n The Touring Theater of North Carolina will present “Piece Work,” a dramatization based on the work of North Carolina writer Barbara Presnell from noon until 1 p.m. at Surry Community College in the teaching auditorium. “Piece Work” documents the rise and fall of the textile industry, recognizing the dignity of the work and honoring those who do the work.

n The Surry County Cooperative Extension will take a bus tour to the Southern Spring Home and Garden Show. The bus will be leaving from Dobson town parking lot at 8:15 a.m. and will return at approximately 5:30 p.m. The cost is $30 and spaces are limited. n Teen Tech Week will be celebrated at the Mount Airy Public Library with programs each night that would interest teens including local college senior Sarah Hegler, who will demonstrate what she has learned while studying interactive design and animation using computer graphics. There will also be a Battle of the Bands using the library’s Wii on Tuesday. Teens will pick the one song that each group will perform and the best score wins. On Wednesday, the library will have a Wii Dance Dance Revolution Party. All events begin at 6 p.m. and are free.

n A Small Fruit workshop will be held at the Extension office from 3 to 5 p.m. Garwood will show participants how to grow many different small fruit crops including strawberries, blueberries, grapes, blackberries and raspberries. n April is National Poetry month. The Mount Airy Public Library encourages English/Language Arts teachers to submit poetry entries by their students, to be read by the students at the library. Poems should be submitted by teachers to the library on March 26. The library invites the students to come to the library to read them on April 20 at 6 p.m.

n The Senior Center will be going to Harrah’s Casino in Cherokee. n National Library Week will be celebrated at the Mount Airy Public Library. The library will be announcing its essay contest winners during this week and beginning its Spring Book Sale. All money raised during the book sale will help fund projects throughout the year.

n The Mount Airy Public Library’s Picture Books book club meets to watch the movie “My Sister’s Keeper” at 6 p.m. The book will be available for checkout at the library and the movie is free.

April 14

n In support of the Global Language consortium, specifically the Brazilian culture, a one-hour program on Capoeira Dance will be performed by the Nego Gato Dance Company from 11 a.m. until noon at the outdoor patio area of the Knight’s Grill at Surry Community College. Capoeira combines the various forms of music, dance, acrobatics, martial arts, theater and philosophy into a total mind/body discipline, whose roots originated in the Salvadoran and Brazilian regions of the world. This group has performed at the Kennedy Center.

n The Friends of the Library have invited the Miss Julia series author, Ann Ross, to visit the library at 2 p.m. Hear Ross talk about her much-loved series for free.

n The Mount Airy Public Library’s April meeting for the Book Chats book club will be at 1 p.m.

May 1

n The second annual “Yadkin Valley Has Talent” vocal competition will be held at Lila Swaim Park in Jonesville during the “Jonesville Jubilee.” First place receives a recording session, 25 CDs, 25 photos and bios. Second place will receive $100 in cash, and third place will receive $75. Auditions will be held. For more information, call Alan Combs at (336) 835-1189 and Leon Reece at (336) 835-2916.

May 11

n The Mount Airy Public Library’s teen theater group, The Dewey Decimal Players, will be presenting “Fairytale Theatre” at 3:30 p.m. This event helps the library celebrate Children’s Book Week is for all ages and is free.

n The Mount Airy Public Library’s May meeting of the Picture Books book club will be held to watch the May movie at 6 p.m. The May movie/book is “Julie and Julia.” Books are available for checkout at the library.

May 13

n The Mount Airy Public Library will have visiting children’s book author Sarah Sullivan at the library. She will be leading a writing workshop for older elementary students. This workshop is free.

May 24

n Mount Airy Public Library’s Book Chats book club will meet at 1 p.m. to discuss the books participants are reading. This event is open to everyone.

May 27

n The Mount Airy Public Library’s Community book club meets at 7 p.m.
