Preparing for this competition is a great deal of work, as is planning and putting on the events. Yet doing so keeps alive a long-standing tradition in classrooms around the nation, and offers another outlet for academic enrichment for students willing to do the work for the competitions.

To area Boy Scouts who are putting on the annual Scouting for Food campaign. The scouts, and their leaders, put in quite a bit of early morning weekend hours, as well as other time, collecting food for needy families in the area. And, they do it in a non-intrusive way, so that families who are not able, or choose not to, participate can do so easily without feeling as if they’re being imposed upon.

To the seventh-grade students and staff at Gentry Middle School who have found a creative way to incorporate curriculum and fundraising into one event. The third annual Pinewood Derby helped raise money for Victory Junction Gang Camp, a facility for children with chronic medical conditions and serious illnesses, while teaching the students teamwork, science, math, English and other many other skills.

To the fundraisers and organizers of Skate Mount Airy Inc. leading the way to creating a skateboard park in Mount Airy. The group has raised about $60,000 toward the effort and have found a way to design the park so it would cost only $70,000 instead of the original estimated $100,000. Once it’s up and running, kids who enjoy skateboarding will have somewhere to go to practice their sport safely, and they will have the parents, concerned citizens and others in Skate Mount Airy to thank for it.

To those area residents who took time out of their busy schedules to talk to high schoolers during Career and Technical Education week. These people may have had just what a student needed to be inspired to stay in school, or to help direct a student toward a career path the teen otherwise wouldn’t have thought of.
