Garry Scearce, a Republican, filed as expected to run for the Mount Airy district seat of the county commissioners. Scearce said he waited until Monday to file because he wanted to file on his 50th birthday.
Scearce announced at the end of January his intentions to run for office. He will retire this year from Surry County Emergency Services after 30 years of service. Scearce said he had been considering the idea for a few years and decided to go ahead and run after incumbent Craig Hunter announced that he would not run for another term.
So far, Kate Appler, a Democrat, also has filed for the position. She serves on the Mount Airy Board of Education.
At the district level, Spencer Key filed for re-election to his position as district court judge for district 17-B. Incumbents Charles Neaves and Angela Puckett also have filed to run for re-election to their district court seats.
Those wishing to file for most general county offices have one more week to do so. The filing deadline for all partisan offices, Surry County Board of Education seats, all judicial seats and district attorney ends on Feb. 26 at noon.
For more information on filing, contact the Surry County Board of Elections at 401-8225.
