After yet another slight snow fall forced Surry County and Mount Airy City schools to cancel Monday night’s scheduled basketball games, the tournament setup has finally been decided upon by the conference athletic directors.
According to coach Barry Hall of East Surry High School, the tournament will be as follows:
There will be both a 1A and 2A tournament, with champions crowned in each division. The opening portion of the 1A tournament will be held at East Surry in Pilot Mountain Thursday, the original host for the intended version, while the first round of the 2A tournament will be held at Surry Central in Dobson.
The 1A side of the bracket will need a “play-in game” pitting the girls’ and boys’ fourth- and fifth-place teams against each other for the right to play the conference leader.
The first game beginning at 4 p.m. will feature Winston-Salem Prep girls versus North Stokes, followed by East Surry boys versus North Stokes.
There will also be one final regular season game played Wednesday, as West Stokes travels to North Surry beginning with varsity girls at 5:30 p.m.
Both divisional brackets will begin with the first-place girls team taking on the fourth-place girls team beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday. That game will be followed by the boys’ first- and fourth-place teams at 5:30 p.m., then a meeting of the second- and third-place girls 7 p.m. to be capped by the second- and third-place boys at 8:30 p.m.
Friday all games will be played at East Surry beginning with the 2A girls championship at 4 p.m., followed by the 1A girls championship at 5:30 p.m. Girls’ awards will be handed out afterwards.
The 1A boys title game will then follow at 7 p.m. with the 2A title game scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
For those keeping score, the brackets should look like this:
1A Girls — #1 Mount Airy vs. #4 North Stokes/#5 W-S Prep winner; #2 Bishop McGuinness vs. #3 East Surry
1A Boys — #1 W-S Prep vs. #4 East Surry/#5 North Stokes winner; #2 Bishop McGuinness vs. #3 Mount Airy
