A Mount Airy man wrecked on U.S. 52 Sunday morning and was pronounced dead on the scene according to an Emergency Services official.

Charles Wade Westmoreland, 65, of Mount Airy, was driving his car when he lost control and crashed into an exit sign, said John Shelton, director of Surry County Emergency Services. Westmoreland’s vehicle overturned several times, then he was thrown from his vehicle. Shelton said Westmoreland was pronounced dead on the scene.

The accident occurred sometime between 10 and 11 a.m. on U.S. 52 southbound at the first exit ramp for Pilot Mountain. Shelton said that Westmoreland was getting onto the exit ramp when the accident happened.

Pilot Mountain Rescue Squad, Pilot Mountain Fire Department, and Surry County Emergency Medical Services responded to the accident. One lane of U.S. 52 was shut down while units responded to the accident.

The cause of the accident is being investigated by the highway patrol.
