DOBSON — After a few slow days at the Surry County Board of Elections office, two county commissioners filed on Friday to run for office.

Dr. Jim Harrell Jr., a Democrat, filed for re-election to his south district seat on the Surry County Board of Commissioners. This district covers the Bryan, Elkin, Marsh and Rockford areas.

Paul Johnson, a Republican, filed to run for the 30th district seat of the N.C. Senate. He announced his candidacy for this office last August. So far Ric Marshall, a Democrat, and Don East, the incumbent Republican, have also filed for the office. Johnson is the chairman of the board of county commissioners at this time.

On Thursday, Angela Puckett filed for re-election to her seat as a district court judge for district 17-B, and Virginia Foxx, a Republican, submitted her paperwork to the state to run for the Fifth District N.C. House of Representatives seat again. Democrat William Kennedy has also filed to run for the Fifth District seat.

Also this week, James Calvin Cunningham and Bradford Jones added their names to the list of candidates running for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Burr.
