MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Margie Whitlock Joyce Ziglar, 88, 227 Gordon St. (Sandy Level) and a resident of Central Continuing Care for three years, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010, at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem. She was born Aug. 31, 1921, in Red Brush area. Her parents were the late Nelson S. Whitlock and Della Habor Whitlock. She graduated from the Mount Airy Colored High School in 1941; 1989 completed a certificate of Nursing Aid I at Surry Community College; 1942-43 attended Norfolk Polytechnic College, Norfolk, Va. She was a self-educator as well as a life-long learner. Mrs. Ziglar was employed as a cook/cafeteria manager at the Rockford Street Elementary School; she was also employed by Surry Community Action Program as a community organizer/advocate; she worked as a HUD Grant facilitator for better housing in Sandy Level area. She was a dedicated/active member of Jones Temple Methodist and Mallalieu-Jones United Methodist churches for 60 years. She served as a Sunday school/vacation Bible school teacher, secretary, choir member, MYF youth leader, United Methodist Women (president/secretary), church historian and Mother of the Church and many other committees. Community service includes co-founder (along with Ms. Mabel Allen) of Sandy Level Community Council, volunteer at Crossroads Behavioral Services, Meals on Wheels, American Red Cross, Twelve Oaks Adult Center, Federal Food Distribution for the Needy, served on the Advisory Committee for the YVEDDI, Inc. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey Ziglar Sr., and Ernest Chester Joyce, husband/father of children; son, Jimmie N. Joyce; a brother; Thomas A. Whitlock; three sisters, Luelma Satterfield, Olivia Prillerman and Anna Whitlock; stepmother, Annie Smith Hines Whitlock; three stepbrothers, H. Ray Hines, Webb Hines and Richard Hines; and two stepsisters, Kathleen Gordon and Elmira Critz. Surviving are two daughters, Elaine Joyce-Norris of the home and Ernestine R. (Henry) Daniels of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Gemee Lynn Joyce of Clinton, Md., Heidi Reece (Alton) Anderson of Atlanta, Ga., and Timothy Q. (Tyronette) Leech of Fort Washington, Md.; three great-grandchild; a stepdaughter, Nancy Boboza of Madison; stepson, Dewey Ziglar Jr. of Pine Hurst; three stepgrandchildren; and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, adopted children and friends. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, at L.H. Jones Auditorium with visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. and funeral at 2 p.m. The Rev. E. Cecil Thompson will officiate with the Rev. Dr. Benjamin Whitlock as eulogist. Burial will be at Tucker Family Cemetery, Laurel Springs Church Road, Mount Airy, off N.C. 89, off Pine Ridge Road.
