Those who thought January was a wetter and colder month than usual were right, with precipitation totals for the month nearly double the usual amount and temperatures about 5 degrees chillier than normal.

Boosted by a snowfall on Jan. 29-30, Mount Airy received 6.09 inches of precipitation last month, compared to the average monthly total of 3.40 inches, according to figures from F.G. Doggett Water Plant — the city’s official weather-monitoring station.

January’s output was 79.1 percent above normal.

The maximum amount falling during a 24-hour period was noted on Jan. 25 when 2.90 inches of rain drenched Mount Airy, representing almost half the precipitation total for the month.

Measurable rain or snowfall occurred on nine of January’s 31 days.

So far, February is continuing the same wet pattern, with nearly 1 inch of precipitation recorded at the plant as of 7 a.m. Friday, which does not include the total from the latest winter storm.

Colder Conditions

Meanwhile, temperatures during January ranged from a monthly high of 64 degrees on both Jan. 16 and Jan. 19 to a low of 9 recorded for both Jan. 11-12, according to statistics issued by the water plant.

The mercury averaged 33.4 degrees for January, compared to the usual monthly average of 38.3.

Frost was noted on eight days last month.

Weather records have been maintained in Mount Airy since 1924.
