A day after the Granite Bears raced past Surry Central, East Surry opened up the game on a tear, utilizing a 14-5 run to close the half and take a 19-point lead into the locker room
Mount Airy battled back in the second half, starting the third quarter with a flourish behind Wade Moody and Justin Collier.
It was Moody who kept Mount Airy in the game for the most part down the stretch, as the wily senior finished with a game-high 25 points in the loss.
East Surry coach Jason Anderson was obviously pleased with his team’s performance.
“There are some things we could do better but it was a good win after being out of the gym for a week,” Anderson said. “We played well in the first half, did a great job defensively. In the second half we kind of rushed our offense a little bit. When they pressed us, we broke the press, but we rushed shots and didn’t hit them and they climbed back in the ball game. You’ve got to give those guys credit because they could have hung their heads at half time and not come back out and played hard but they did and in the end it turned into a typical East Surry-Mount Airy basketball game.”
