STUART, Va. — Firearms charges have been filed against a Claudville man in connection with a standoff with deputies earlier this week, according to Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.

Tommy Everette Jones, 24, was arrested on charges of brandishing a firearm, reckless handling of a firearm and discharging a firearm in a public place.

The arrest stems from an altercation Monday in the parking lot of M-N-M Grocery in Ararat during which Jones allegedly pointed a handgun at another person, the sheriff said. Jones fired a shot into the air and then re-aimed the weapon at the other party before leaving the parking lot, Smith added.

Authorities were called and subsequently located Jones at his residence on Stateline Road. Deputies R.D. Rorrer and J.W. Kruse of the Patrick Sheriff’s Office and Trooper A.G. Roberts of the Virginia State Police became involved in a brief standoff with Jones. He told officers from inside the home that he intended to kill himself.

After several minutes, Rorrer was able to talk Jones into giving up his weapon and he was taken into custody without further incident.

The Claudville man was being held under a $2,500 secured bond in the Patrick County Jail in Stuart at last report.
