PILOT MOUNTAIN — The temporary shelter set up by the Surry County Chapter of the American Red Cross closed Friday as the last of the flood victims found places to live.

The Surry County Red Cross shelter opened last Monday in the Armfield Civic Center to those who were affected by the flooding last weekend. About 40 residents from 29 campers and mobile homes were evacuated from the Pilot Mountain Family Campground. The campground is beside the Ararat River and most of the campers there were being used as permanent homes.

Tom Dunn, emergency services coordinator for the Red Cross, said multiple agencies, local churches, residents and businesses all pitched in to help the flood victims.

“We got a lot of assistance from the community. We got assistance from the Salvation Army. The people were so poor, they needed help with electricity, clothing and shelter. We got help from DSS (Department of Social Services). We were coordinating all of these agencies trying to get as much assistance as we could to get these people placed,” Dunn said.

Dunn said he is thankful for all of the community support.

“It was a great effort by the whole community,” he said. “There’s still a lot of follow-up to do yet. I mean these people are still not totally out of the woods yet. But at least for this snowstorm, I got them all placed somewhere where they will be dry and warm.”

Dunn said the local chapter of the Red Cross took in $22,000 for Haiti, and that doesn’t include those who donated through other agencies.

“We did great for Haiti, but we still need donations for fire and flood victims in Surry County,” Dunn said. “We haven’t finished adding up the cost yet, but just for the flood victims we spent over $10,000.”

For those who want to donate specifically to the Surry County Chapter of the American Red Cross for this particular disaster, Dunn said, they can write a check and put “Pilot Mountain Flood” in the memo. Checks should be mailed to the American Red Cross, 844 Westlake Drive, Mount Airy, NC 27030. For more information on how to help, call the Red Cross at 786-4183.
