ROCKFORD — The Rockford Preservation Society has scheduled its second planning meeting for the upcoming Remember Rockford Families Reunion Weekend.

The planning meeting will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7, at the organization’s 1914 Rockford Methodist Church. Its purpose is to identify volunteers who will represent their families in the planning and coordination of the September reunion.

Hannah Holyfield, president of the society, said she realized that the meeting is on Super Bowl Sunday, but it should be finished well before the Super Bowl.

“We would like anyone who would be interested in sharing their ideas,” said Holyfield.

Descendants of Rockford families who are interested in participating as team leaders or volunteers in organizing the three-day reunion are invited and encouraged to attend. They do not have to have attended the first meeting to attend the second one.

The first planning meeting was held in November. Holyfield said, “It turned out pretty good. We had good ideas shared.”

The society members did not host a planning meeting in December due to the candlelight service they were planning. However, Holyfield said the plan is to have a meeting each month or every six weeks to help plan the reunion. If people cannot attend every meeting, society members will keep them informed of what takes place.

At the November meeting, Holyfield said the group spent time getting better acquainted and sharing experiences from previous reunions they had attended. Several ideas were gathered for the upcoming event. At the Feb. 7 meeting, people will probably finalize the reunion registration page that is to be mailed out and posted online. Members attending the meeting will give their thoughts on what it should say and what the pricing should be.

“Hopefully we will have a draft there to present,” said Holyfield.

Many families contributed to the development of Surry County’s historic Rockford village. Thousands of descendants now live across North Carolina and the nation.

The Remember Rockford Families Reunion is being held Sept. 3-5 to bring descendants together to celebrate the history of the village and to encourage participation in the restoration effort. Registration for the three-day event will begin soon.
