KERNERSVILLE — After it steamrolled every opponent leading up to last Friday, North Surry wrestling had to pull out all the stops to keep its undefeated record.

The Greyhounds did just enough to hold off a tremendous push from new conference foe Bishop McGuinness, as North took the win 32-30 to improve to 24-0 overall and 5-0 in conference.

North Surry coach Eric Jessup said the outcome of the match hung in the balance to the very end.

“It was down to the wire and fun to be a part of, to say the least,” Jessup said.

The Greyhounds haven’t had that close of a conference result in nearly a year and Jessup said Bishop McGuinness was a very able opponent.

“They’re a really tough team,” Jessup said. “Our kids just all together stepped up and did what they had to do to come out of there with a win. To sum it up, I would say it was just a total team effort.”

Uncharacteristic losses in the middle weight classes, where the Greyhounds have made a living during the past two seasons, ultimately put the win in question. Bishop swept North in five consecutive weight classes, starting with the 119-pound weight class.

While the score was too close for comfort, Jessup said in the long run, the way his defeated wrestlers performed pushed the Greyhounds over the hump.

“The guys that lost stayed off their backs and didn’t give up a pin,” he said.

North Surry will host South Stokes tonight for its senior night, beginning at 7 p.m.
