The break-in charges stem from incidents involving three vehicles parked at Central Continuing Care on Newsome Street and another at Sav-A-Lot on Carter Street in late December in which items including GPS units, a digital camera, a CD player, money, debit cards and other items were stolen. Tate turned himself in at the police station Thursday on warrants filed on Jan. 15 in the cases. He is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on Feb. 1.
n Hundreds of dollars in damage and the theft of a GPS system occurred when someone forcibly entered a vehicle at Mayberry Mall on Wednesday. After a window was broken on a 2000 Cadillac owned by Joyce Draughn Schmidt, an employee of Belk, a TomTom GPS system valued at $150 was removed, with damage to the door window and frame estimated at $400. The case remains open for further investigation.
n An incident involving the fraudulent burning of a dwelling was reported Wednesday at a house at 708 Spring St., where a resident allegedly placed clothes in the oven of a kitchen stove and then turned on the stove. Damage estimated at $25 occurred to the clothing. The victim in the case is Bill Norman of Bill Norman Construction. Mark Anthony Collins, 52, of the Spring Street address, was charged with being drunk and disruptive and held in the Surry County Jail in lieu of a $1,000 secured bond. Collins is to be in court on Feb. 25.
n Also Thursday, violations of shoplifting and driving while license revoked were issued against Heather Renee Moser, 23, of 1515 Forrest Drive. Moser allegedly concealed items in her purse at the Poppy’s clothing business on Moore Avenue and then dumped them inside the store before leaving. She was located by police after a brief investigation and is facing a Feb. 23 appearance in Surry District Court.
n Patterson Corp. was the victim of a larceny reported Monday. A blue and silver Kobalt air compressor valued at $700 was removed from behind Patterson Chrysler at 538 N. Andy Griffith Parkway. The case is listed as inactive, with no leads to pursue at this time.
n A larceny was discovered Wednesday involving the theft of a tool box and assorted tools owned by Dennis Charles Tate, a Cameron Lane resident, with the loss totaling $360. Tate told police that he had been shopping at Lowe’s Home Improvement and later found the property missing from the bed of his truck. Included were a drive socket set valued at $200 along with wrenches, pliers and other tools. The case remains open for further investigation.
n William Dwayne Patterson told police Monday that the license plate had been removed from his 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle while it was parked at his residence on East Poplar Street. The case is listed as inactive, with no leads to pursue at this time.
n A break-in was reported Monday at the home of Kendra Shevette Simmons on Apostle Drive, where someone cut the lock on a door to a crawlspace. No property was discovered missing, according to police records, with minimal damage occurring to the door. The case is listed as inactive, with no leads to pursue at this time.
n Danny Gray Hunter, 51, of 188 Draughn Road, Elkin, was arrested last Saturday night on drug and other offenses after an incident at Wal-Mart. Hunter allegedly concealed a wristwatch valued at $21 at the store, with controlled substances found on his person during a police search after his arrest. In addition to concealment of merchandise, three violations of possessing marijuana, hydrocodone and Xanax were filed against Hunter along with a trespassing offense due to him being previously banned from Wal-Mart. He was jailed under a $20,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in Surry District Court on Feb. 8.
n Keith Clayton Wilson, 28, of 4923 Westfield Road, was arrested last Saturday on multiple violations after a traffic stop on North Main Street near Independence Boulevard for an alleged failure to burn headlights. Police say Wilson provided a false name, “Jonathan Samuel Spencer,” and date of birth to them during the stop, leading to a charge of resisting, obstructing or delaying an officer. He also was found to have outstanding warrants against him from the Surry County Sheriff’s Office for failing to appear in court as well the N.C. Department of Correction for a probation violation, arrest records show. Wilson was confined in the Surry County Jail under a $11,500 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in District Court on Feb. 8.
n The larceny of a Holton trumpet at Mount Airy Middle School was reported on Jan. 15. The victim of the crime is Lesa Reeves of Rural Hall, who told police that the $1,072 instrument used by her son had been stolen from the school band room. The case remains open for further investigation.
n Also on Jan. 15, the theft of 30 gallons of diesel fuel was reported at Mount Airy High School. Someone removed the fuel, valued at $84, from a Magnum generator. The victim is J.G. Coram Co. Inc., based on Caudle Drive. The case is listed as inactive, with no leads to pursue at this time.
