The house, at 906 McBride Road, was set on fire last Friday night, according to Surry County Fire Marshal Doug Jones. He said this was the third case of arson involving the house.
The second arson, the one previous to last week’s, occurred around one year ago, according to Jones. No one lived at the house at that time, and the house has remained unoccupied since then.
“The house has been vacant for quite some time,” Jones remarked.
Jones said the fire marshal’s office is looking into the case. To his knowledge, no arrests have ever been made related to the arsons at this residence.
Four Way, Bannertown and Franklin volunteer fire departments responded to the most recent fire.
“It was pretty extensive,” said Jones.
The previous fires caused much damage to the house, and the most recent fire reached into a few more rooms and caused more of the roof to collapse.
Jones said the area has also seen several arsons in the past at the nearby Crosswinds development. The fire marshal said he wasn’t sure why so many arsons were concentrated in the area, but none have happened in Crosswinds recently.
He said an arrest was made a while back in connection with an arson case at Crosswinds, and the man convicted served time in jail for the arson.
“He was probably a major cause,” Jones said.
