Progress has been made on the Sandy Level Community building project, the board of the Mount Airy Historic Preservation Committee learned Wednesday.

“This past month has been a very exciting month for the Sandy Level center,” said Carol Burke, who introduced Project Manager Jamie Tilley to the board.

Tilley said Bill Norman, the general contractor for the project, had secured a work permit from the Surry County Building Inspections Office. He said the work permit and two copies of the plans are on the site.

He said Kevin Thomas will be the restoration consultant to insure the restoration is right for the time period. Ben Cooke from Cooke Rentals, Inc. has committed to donating equipment for the cause, Tilley said.

“Sandy Level Community Center is a 501c (3) non-profit foundation and will be seeking donations, grants and funding from local, state and federal governments. Your support as the Mount Airy local Historic Preservation Commission is very important in getting funding. We look forward to continuing to work with this commission to complete the application to be a local historic landmark designation as you voted at the Dec. 16 meeting,” Tilley said.

Shelby King, president of the Sandy Level Community Center, read a resolution of appreciation to Bill Norman following Tilley’s presentation.

The historic preservation commission is looking into getting the city of Mount Airy established as a Certified Local Government, which would allow the town to apply for state and federal grants for local historic preservation projects. No action was taken on the topic at last night’s meeting.
