A Dobson man was killed Monday and a Mount Airy man was charged in his death after the two were involved in a head-on collision at 5:45 p.m.

Coy Clifford White, 78, of Dobson, died after he was transported to Northern Hospital of Surry County, according to North Carolina Highway Patrol Officer B.M. Jones.

Jason Clark, 37, of Mount Airy, was charged with felony death by vehicle, felony hit and run, and driving while intoxicated, the trooper said.

Jones said the wreck occurred when a Ford F250 traveling east on Highway 268, near Mount Herman Church Road, crossed the center line and smashed head-on the Volkswagon, driven by White, who was heading west.

The trooper said the driver of the Ford attempted to leave the scene after the crash and struck a second car, but only minor damage occurred to that vehicle.

At the time of the crash, Jones said the Ford was traveling about 55 mph, which is the posted speed limit for that stretch of highway. He said the Volkswagon had nearly come to a stop, which he said indicated the driver may have been trying to avoid the crash. The road was closed for about a half hour while workers cleared the scene.

Jones said Clark was not injured in the wreck. As of 9 p.m. Monday he was jailed under a $55,000 bond.
