The Surry County Chapter of the NAACP will once again be hosting a celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

This year’s event will take place on Jan. 18, which happens to be the slain civil rights activist’s birthday.

“Anytime that you celebrate is good and we usually try to have it on the Monday. You can celebrate any time, but it just happens to be on his birthday this year,” said Faye Carter, president of the Surry County chapter.

The celebration will feature lunch, a guest speaker, recognitions, music and a presentation by the NAACP youth. It will begin at 11 a.m. in the fellowship hall of Central United Methodist Church.

“It’s our annual celebration in honor of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” said Carter.

The local chapter of the NAACP has been hosting some sort of commemorative celebration for around 20 years, though it has not always been a luncheon as it will be this year and has been for the past few years. Prior to deciding to have a luncheon, the NAACP hosted programs including church services or other events. However, the luncheon has proven popular. Carter said next year the group may plan something different.

This year’s guest speaker is Allen Hines, who also happens to be Carter’s nephew. Hines is the founder of Al Holla Edutainment, a life skills and character educator and a youth empowerment speaker.

He has more than a decade of experience in the field as a juvenile detention staff member, group home staffer and an academic teacher at an alternative high school. He is employed by Piedmont Community College, where he teaches life skills, cognitive behavior intervention, employability skills and character education to pre-release inmates and at-risk youth.

Anyone interested in attending has until Wednesday to purchase a ticket for $10 from any NAACP member or from Carter, who can be reached at 789-3194.
