Friday morning at Mount Airy High School, Keenia Beck’s honors art class was recognized as the first-place winners in the 2010 Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention logo contest.

High school art and design classes in Surry County were asked to submit logo concepts to the Convention Committee for consideration as the marketing logo for this year’s event.

The students honored were Ryan Goins, Caleb Bentley, Haley McKinney, Ashley Smith, McKenzie Culler, Peyton Stanley, Tiffany Cavillo, David Truban, Lauren Smith, Margaret Slate, Sandy Lor, Levi Thomas, Taylor Hiatt, Meg Pruett, Wes Bledsoe and Jessi Gwyn.

Buck Buckner presented the award and a check for $200 to Beck.

“We appreciate your participation. A lot of the entries were good, but this was outstanding,” Buckner said.

The Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention, which is in its first year and is planned to be an annual event, will be held at Surry Community College to showcase the unique sounds of old-time music found in this region. The convention will showcase individual musicians and bands that will compete for large cash prizes during a two-day period. The event is being organized by the Surry County Tourism Development Authority, the Dobson Tourism Development Authority, Surry Community College and the Yadkin Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The event will be held on March 26 at 7 p.m., with a $5 admission, featuring a square dance and cake walk. On March 27, the event starts at 11 a.m. and admission is free. Food will be available at the Knight’s Grill.

The chosen logo will be used in all of the marketing efforts employed by the committee. These would include print advertising, banners, newspapers, local and state Web sites and T-shirts.
