Long, Fulp lead Cards to win

DANBURY — A 16-foot jumper by Kelsey Long paired with two blocks in the final minutes from freshman Keri Fulp allowed East Surry to slip by North Stokes 51-43 Saturday.

The Vikings cut the Cardinals lead to just two, but the jumper from Long, the blocks by Fulp and a steal and layup by Sabra Bryant held off North and gave coach Keith Gunter and company their eighth win of the season.

Tied at nine after the first period, Gunter said the Cardinals upped their defensive pressure and began to knock down shots, allowing East to outscore North 17-9 before the half.

“We put a little more pressure getting after it on defense and basically in that second quarter we started hitting shots,” Gunter said. “In the first quarter they were packing it in on us and contesting our shots a little better.”

Long led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Autumn Cole with 10, Chelsea Nichols with 9 and Bryant with 8.

Jodie Lemons led North Stokes with 14 points in the loss.

East Surry moved to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the Northwest 1A/2A Conference.

The Cardinals will face Mount Airy Tuesday.
