The Surry County Sheriff’s Office recently made arrests connected to several break-ins, one dating back 1 1/2 years. Officers have charged four people in connection with the separate break-ins and thefts in the Mount Airy and Elkin areas.

Sheriff Graham Atkinson said a tip about stolen property at a residence on Cadle Ford Road led to the most recent arrest last Thursday.

Deputies originally went on a domestic call at the home of Jose Guadalupe Ruiz, 23, of 880 Cadle Ford Road. With a tip, there they found a backpack leaf blower that resembled one reported stolen more than a year ago from a residence on Laurel Springs Church Road. When they ran the serial number off the blower, they found that it was stolen June 4, 2008.

Further investigation at the home led to the recovery of a utility trailer reported stolen from another residence on Laurel Springs Church Road earlier this month.

Ruiz was arrested and charged with misdemeanor larceny in the theft of the leaf blower and felony larceny in the theft of the trailer.

Also connected, Brittany Scales, 16, of 177 Carter Road, was arrested earlier this week on felony charges of breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering in connection with a break-in June 23 at a home on Hanes Road in Elkin.

Atkinson said Scales turned herself in Tuesday after learning that another suspect had been arrested and that she was likely to be identified.

In separate crimes, warrants have been obtained charging two men with breaking and entering and larceny after breaking and entering.

Dereck Scott Ragland, 39, faces charges from a break-in on Pipers Gap Road on Sept. 5. Atkinson said Ragland was a suspect in the break-in but was not charged at the time. Warrants were obtained after he allegedly sold some of the stolen video gaming equipment to a local business. Ragland has not yet been arrested. He has no known address and may be in Virginia.

Surry County officers obtained warrants charging Patrick Michael Reagan, 23, with a break-in on Fancy Gap Road on Nov. 16. Reagan is in the New River Regional Jail in Dublin, Va., where he is being held on other charges.
