My big, snowy adventure

Knowing I had Friday off and that snow was supposedly imminent, I set off for my parent’s house early Friday morning.

I made it there before the snow began falling and was looking forward to a weekend of sitting by the fire with a good book, watching the snow fall, and maybe opening some Christmas presents as we were celebrating with my aunt and uncle over the weekend.

Friday afternoon went beautifully. We fixed a pot of Brunswick stew and grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner. There was a fire crackling in the fireplace. My mom and I made plans to sit down in front of the television, find a good movie and knock out the last of the wrapping before the relatives were due to arrive sometime on Saturday. The snow had been falling steadily for several hours and the outside lights made it sparkle as it covered the ground and the trees. It was turning out to be a perfect winter evening.

Or so I thought.

Just minutes after finishing dinner, the phone rang. The woman leasing the barn had hung around too late and ended up running off the road not 50 yards after leaving the driveway. She was stranded with no way to get home and a 10-year-old in tow. They ended up having to stay the night at our house, meaning we had to play host and hostesses. A little bit of the wrapping got done, but not all of it. The movie had to be postponed. And as a bonus, we had to re-clean the house and re-wash sheets before the relatives arrived Saturday afternoon.

Saturday started to get a little better after the house was cleaned. I even got to take a walk in the snow and get some pictures around the farm. It truly looked like a winter wonderland and my mood was drastically improving.

There was another fire in the fireplace and after dinner we exchanged Christmas presents with my aunt and uncle. There was even warm apple pie for dessert.

On Sunday, we were scheduled to go to a Christmas lunch at a local bed and breakfast, one that has been planned for several weeks. On the way out the driveway, in our nice clothes, we discovered a small problem. The driveway happened to be blocked by a car. Completely blocked. And so, the adventure began again. In his nice pants, my dad had to get out the tractor to tow the car out of the way so we could get to lunch.

The meal went smoothly and we made it back home without further incident. However, if I had any hope of returning to work on Monday, I had to hit the road before it got dark, and that meant I needed to get my car unstuck.

So, once again, out came the tractor. In what seemed like no time at all, my dad had towed my car out of the yard and onto the driveway. He was then nice enough to drive it down the steep driveway to the road for me so that I did not end up in a tree. With my car looking a little worse for wear (it kind of looks like I went mudding in my Jetta), I made it to the highway and back to Mount Airy just after dark settled Sunday night.

So, it is Monday and I am sitting safely at work, getting back into the grind of things after an eventful, snow-filled, slight disaster of a weekend and all I can think about is the fact that I never did get to sit in front of the fireplace with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate. Maybe I will get my chance over Christmas. After all, the snow bubble does seem to have popped.
