PILOT MOUNTAIN — After more than a year of planning, the ABC store opened its doors Thursday morning to a small crowd waiting outside.

Mayor Earl Sheppard bought the first bottle of liquor that he then turned around and donated back to the ABC store to be put on permanent display.

The store is in the old CVS location beside Lowes Foods on Key Street.

According to Marshall Atkins, the chairman of the Pilot Mountain ABC board, there were about 15 people waiting outside the store when they opened the doors at 9 a.m.

Store Manager Paula Jones and Assistant Manager Lisa Lewis rang up a steady stream of customers just after the opening. Two part-time employees have been hired. They are John McKenzie and Chris Willard. ABC Board members Larry Cooke and Dwight Atkins were also on hand for the store’s opening.

The store will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, except Sundays.

Atkins said the store will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. The store will be closed on Christmas day and on Jan. 1, 2010.

A grand opening has not been set.
